The fireworks celebration took place on the Hudson River for the 4th consecutive year, moving from the East River on the East Side of Manhattan. The fireworks show, which was viewed by millions of spectators along the West Side of Manhattan and the from many sites along the Hudson River in New Jersey, lit the sky with colorful bursts launched from four barges located on the river. The annual event celebrates the American Independence Day holiday which marks the day of the adoption of the US Declaration of independence in 1776.

The parade includes many marching bands, elaborate floats, performers, and celebrities to entertain the crowd. The stars of the show are the large helium filled balloons of popular characters which float along the parade route. The parade route starts on Central Park West near the American Museum of Natural History and winds its way down to Macy's flagship store in Herald Square on 34th Street and 7th Avenue.

23 imagesThe National September 11 Memorial opened its doors to the general public on September 12, 2011, one day after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the USA. On Sunday, September 11, the memorial was the scene of the 9/11 memorial ceremonies, and was open to the families of the victims. The memorial is a tribute to the people killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The memorial also includes the victims of the bombing of the World Trade Center, which occurred in 1993. Visitors to the memorial were able to view the names of those who perished memorialized around the perimeter of the memorials two pools. It was a time of reflection and remembrance. Some visitors left flowers, flags, or messages on the memorial. Others created rubbings of the names of the victims.

Major landmarks and tourist areas including Times Square, bridges, tunnels, Grand Central Terminal, and the area around the World Trade Center site saw an increased presence from New York City Police, Port Authority Police, Metropolitan Transit Authority Police, as well as US military Marine troops. All vehicles entering the Times Square area were screened, with selected vehicles directed to pull over for an inspection of the contents.

The National September 11 Memorial, located in New York City at the site of the World Trade Center towers, opened for the first time to families of the victims and will be the site of a memorial ceremony. The memorial will be open to the public beginning Monday, September 12. Preparations including closures of roads and subway stations were being made on the eve of the 10th anniversary. Visitors reflected and took in the various remembrances in the nearby area.

The Labor Day parade is the culmination of a week long celebration of West Indian-Americans and their heritage. Parade participants in colorful festive attire dance along the parade route to the beat of Caribbean music. The elaborate costumes include feathered headdresses, body paint, and facial makeup which add to the unique flavor of the parade. Spectators not only enjoy the sights and sounds of the parade itself, but also can partake in West Indian food and purchase crafts and other items for sale along the parade route on Eastern Parkway. The event attracts 2-3 million spectators annually.

23 imagesHurricane Irene caused flooding of local roads, homes, and businesses in the Village of Mamaroneck located on the Long Island Sound in Westchester County, New York overnight and into early morning on Sunday, August 28, 2011. The mayor, Norman Rosenblum, the village Police and Fire departments, Con Edison, and local residents all played a part in the repair and cleanup efforts. These images represent some of the flooding, residents trying to get around and cleanup after the storm, and the mayor out with the residents to lend support and provide information to the local media.

The tram had been out of service from March 1, 2010 until the relaunch on November 30, 2010. The tram provides transportation between Roosevelt Island in the middle of the East River and the Manhattan station on 59th Street and 1st Avenue via a 5 minute aerial tramway ride which parallels the Queensboro bridge. The images associated with this story were captured on December 5, 2010 and July 15, 2011.

Unlike traditional parades which typically feature participants proceeding in a set direction, the New York City Easter parade is loosely organized with attendees showing off their holiday bonnets, festive hats, and sometimes outlandish outfits in a leisurely manner while walking among spectators. The parade has its roots in the late 19th century as a more traditional religious event, but has evolved over the years to become more of a non-religious spectacle.

The fair has many of the typical attractions of state fairs including the many carnival rides enjoyed by both children and adults. The thrill of the rides is increased when the lights come on around sunset and each ride has its own colorful personality. Some of the rides include the "Yo-Yo", "Gentle Giant" Ferris Wheel, "Sizzler", and "Mini Wave Swinger".
