Magicicada-septendecim-9703.jpg
Molted skins (exuviae) and mostly dead 17-year periodical cicadas (Magicicada septendecim) cover the ground under an oak tree after the mass emergence from their 17 year underground nymphal stage. A chorus of adult males singing can be heard in the background. Brood II 17-year periodical cicadas emerged to breed in the spring of 2013 after last being seen in 1996.
